Reunion Breakfast for the Football TeamOn Saturday morning October 2, 2010 the senior football players from the class of 1970 had a reunion breakfast at the Downtown Marriott in Spartanburg. The group arrived at 8:30 am and welcomed Coach Bill Carr, Coach Ralph Voyles and Coach Fred Kyzer. (Coach Norris passed away in 2002 and we certainly missed him.) We presented the players and coaches with replica jerseys of those worn during our senior year.
We shared a little of what has happened in our lives as did the coaches. It was a wonderful experience. Coach Carr inspired us once again as he discussed the influence and traditions that our team had on Spartanburg High School Football in the years that followed after the merger with Carver High School. We were 9-2-0 as juniors and 9-1-1 as seniors. That’s 18-3-1 in two years but because of the system in place at that time we never qualified for the playoffs. (Our sense of pride is in the fact that we defeated most of the teams that did make the playoffs – and the eventual State Champion, Gaffney!) SHS had been known as the “Graveyard of High School Coaches” before Bill Carr arrived during our sophomore year. Coach Carr told us that the foundation for the State Championships that followed was laid by the class of 1970. We felt very proud indeed!
We presented the coaches with commemorative frames with the picture attached, signed by all the players. As a surprise to all, I had a video of our last game played as seniors, a 34-26 win over T.L. Hanna High School played on a cold and blustery night of November 14, 1969. Needless to say, this was an incredible experience for all of us. I cannot thank the Reunion Committee enough for encouraging us reconnect. We are thankful as a team to have been able to be with the coaches, and each other, again. We have all promised to stay in touch.
